June 20 1940

TheUSSR government and the central Committee of the Communist Party signed a resolution On Organization of Steel Making in the North-west of the USSR. This document predetermined construction of a steel mill in Cherepovets.

December 30 1947

The USSR Government made a decision to resume the construction of Cherepovets steel mill.

March 3 1951

The first shop -the prefabrication shop - is put into operation.

May 18 1954

The first part of the heat & power plant is commissioned.

July 25 1955

The start of sinter production in Cherepovets.

August 24 1955

The first pig iron in Cherepovets is cast. This day becomes the birthday of Cherepovets Steel Mill.

February 12 1956

The first coke is produced.

May 1 1958

The first Cherepovets steel is cast.

January 26 1959

The first rolling mill 1150 is put into operation.

November 15 1959

Hot-strip mill 2800, the largest in Europe, is commissioned.

June 28 1960

Hot-strip mill 1700 is put into operation.

December 28 1960

Continuous semi-finishing mill 700 is commissioned.

September 10 1961

Tests of the first section rolling mill 250 are carried out.

March 3 1963

The first cold rolled coil is produced.

December 13 1965

The first twin-hearth furnace in the country is commissioned.

February 7 1966

Cherepovets Steel Mill is awarded the Order of Lenin.

October 26 1969

The first heat of electric arc furnace steel is tapped.

July 10 1972

The first section bending mill is put into operation in the joist web shop.

April 30 1975

The first hot-rolled coil is produced by the wide strip mill 2000.

April 22 1978

The first coil of dynamo steel is produced.

October 5 1979

100 millionth tone of steel is produced in Cherepovets.

July 17 1980

Cherepovets Steel Mill is awarded the Order of Labor Red Banner for the significant contribution to development of ferrous steelmaking and for outstanding results in production of high quality steels.

November 6 1980

The first heat of oxygen converter steel is produced.

January 7 1983

100 millionth tone of iron is produced in Cherepovets.

June 23 1983

Cherepovets Steel Mill is renamed to Cherepovets Iron and Steel Complex.

April 13 1986

Europe's largest blast furnace (No. 5) Severyanka casts its first iron.

September 24 1993

According to the decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the state enterprise Cherepovets Iron and Steel Complex acquires a new status. It is registered by the municipal administration of the city of Cherepovets as Severstal joint-stock company.

September 23 1994

The first meeting of Severstal's shareholders is held. The Board of Directors is elected and headed by general director Y. V. Lipoukhin.

April 26 1996

The meeting of shareholders elects Y. V. Lipoukhin as a chairman of the Board of Directors. A. A. Mordashov is elected a general director.

July 16 1999

A heavy-duty shaft furnace is commissioned in the electric arc furnace shop.

April 17 2000

Severstal purchases rolling mill 5000 from Izgorskiye Zavody.

February 24 2000

Severstal receives an international quality certificate ISO 9002 from Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance.

June 28 2001

In the city of Viksa, Nighegorodsky region, Severstal and United Metallurgical Company sign an agreement of founding an Alliance 1420 joint venture with aim to develop production of large diameter pipes.

October 10 2001

Severstal becomes the first Russian steel mill to receive an international ISO 14001 certificate for its environmental management program. The auditing was conducted by Bureau Veritas Quality International.

December 4 2001

Alexey Mordashov, Severstal's general director, and Nikolai Tikhomirov, Severstal's personnel director, receive a diploma for winning in the national competition The Company of High Social Responsibility, where Severstal was named the best in the Human Resources Development category.

December 17 2001

In the fifth national competition's Best Companies, held in Moscow, Severstal received the main prize - the Great Russia statuette For Constantly High Results.

April 19 2002

Construction of Continuous galvanizing line, which is a joint project of Severstal and Arcelor, a European company.

July 17 2002

Hot-Strip Mill «2000» has produced the 300,000,000-th ton of rolled steel products.

July 20 2002

A billet continuous casting machine has been commissioned at the Electric Arc Furnace Shop; its designed capacity is 1,500,000 tons of steel billets a year.

July 21 2002

A.A. Mordashov has been elected the Chairman of the Company`s Board of directors by the General Shareholders` Meeting; A.N. Kruchinin has been elected the Company`s Director General.

December 10 2002

In the State Kremlin Palace Severstal`s Top Managers, headed by A.A. Mordashov, the Chairman of the Board of Directors receive a diploma for winning in the third national contest «The organization of high social efficiency».

February 26 2003

Severstal becomes the first metallurgic Russian plant to receive the international OHSAS 18001:1999certificate for its industrial safety and labour protection system.

January 2004

Acquires Rouge Steel (Severstal North America) in Dearborn, Michigan

2006

Acquires controlling interest in Lucchini

2006

Consolidation of steel and mining assets finalised
