Severstal to commence the construction of its second metal polymeric coating line
OAO Severstal (“Severstal”) announced today that its Russian Steel division’s Cherepovets Steel Mill plans to commence construction of its second metal polymeric coating line in August 2008.
Severstal will invest about US$10m in the project. Construction of the line will result in an increased output capacity of polymer-coated metal products of up to 400,000 tons a year. It will produce its first painted coil by late 2009.
The investment is in line with Severstal’s plans to increase its output of deeply-processed products and will enable it to benefit from the construction industry’s growing demand for high-quality sheets with polymeric coating.
Severstal Cherepovets Steel Mill launched the second metal polymeric coating line project in the fourth quarter of 2007.
For reference:
The construction of the second metal polymeric coating line is not the first project aimed at manufacturing products for the construction industry, having been announced by Severstal Russian Steel division. Severstal has also implemented two large-scale projects at Sheksna (Vologda Oblast) Industrial Park: Sheksna Pipe & Section Plant CJSC and Stal’nye Resheniya (“Steel Solutions”) project, as well as the construction of two section mini-mills, each with a capacity of 1m tons, in the central region of Russia. The total amount of investments in Russian Steel during the period from 2007 to 2011 will be US$6bn.
In August 2007, the Iron-and-Steel Works signed a contract for the delivery of the second line with SMS Demag. The German company was a supplier of the principal manufacturing equipment for the first metal polymeric coating line. SMS Demag has submitted initial engineering plans to the Iron-and-Steel Works and has started to deliver a detailed one, for implementing a type-design adjustment and arrangement of the equipment within the selected site. The second line will be constructed similarly to the first one, at an industrial Iron-and-Steel Works site, in the second bay of the existing shop, which is projected to be made 48 m longer. Detailed adjustment designs are prepared by Severstal Project LLC. The design works are scheduled to be completed in Q4 2008.
