OAO Severstal being open to everything new in the area of metallurgical equipment and technologies, is the largest developer and supplier of technologies in the intellectual property market. The company is one of the leaders in the Russian metallurgy for the number of patents received for inventions. Most patents have been received for the new steel grades, new production technologies, improvement of the metallurgical equipment and design of new units.

The investment program of OAO Severstal up to 2010 is estimated as 6.9 billion US Dollars and is intended for product mix change towards high value added products and high quality sheet, including coated sheet and large-diameter pipes.

Alongside with this, the global experience proves that high efficiency of the foreign companies is achieved not only due to modern equipment and advanced technologies, and OAO Severstal introduces the projects targeted on changing employees' attitude to their job - work place, equipment and colleagues within a production cycle. The new standards introduced by the company within the scope of «Industrial Consulting» and «Total Quality Management» projects without significant investments leads to production efficiency improvement and the first stage of these projects' implementation proved that.

In January, 2002 a new project was launched at OAO Severstal with the objective to change the existing approach to the company strategy formation. The project was initiated by Strategic Planning Directorate to create the Balanced Scorecards System. The new system is developed in order to preserve the company profitability under the conditions of instability and aggravating competition in the global market.
