Emission assessment methodology

Severstal implemented a GHG emission monitoring system meeting GHG Protocol requirements.

GHG emissions are monitored at the levels of individual production plants, individual businesses, and the Company overall. This approach provides a high level of detail and gives us an opportunity to respond to emission changes and monitor our management efficiency promptly.

Independent Affirmation

The results of GHG emission monitoring in 2019 and 2020, as well as our measurement methodology for direct GHG emissions (calculated per IPCC 2006) and indirect GHG emissions (calculated per GHG Protocol Scope 2) received affirmation from Deloitte CIS according to ISAE 3410. In 2020 our combined scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions were 27.86 million tonnes of CO2E, 0.9% down from the previous year. This reduction in GHG emissions reflects lower emissions from Vorkutaugol due to repairs and lower intensity of degassing and methane ventilation. Between 2017 and 2020, GHG emissions increased by 0.33 million tonnes of CO2E, or 1.2%, primarily reflecting higher production volumes at Cherepovets Steel Mill (steel production increased by 0.44 million tonnes or 4.1%).

GHG Emissions Composition

We calculate specific GHG emissions per World Steel Association methodology and the ISO 14404 standard. We consider relevant СО2 emissions (scopes 1, 2 and 3).

As we are enhancing our GHG emission assessment system, we included other greenhouse gas emissions (scope 3) in our reporting for the first time. As of early 2021, we completed a preliminary emission assessment for our four major assets and 15 emission source categories. We are a top 20% enterprise worldwide by GHG intensity, and our performance is higher than industry average in Russia.
